Providence, R.I. -- The No. 9 Providence College women's ice hockey team was defeated by cross-town rival Brown University in the 10th Annual Mayor's Cup, 2-1, on Friday, November 27 at Meehan Auditorium in Providence, R.I.
Freshman Hayley Moore wasted little time as she scored first for the Brown Bears at 1:11, assisted by Kerry Nugent and Katie Guay. A little over three minutes later, sophomore Sonny Watrous (Albuquerque, N.M.) scored her seventh goal on the season at 4:31. Watrous evened up the score 1-1, with an unassisted goal past Brown's netminder Stacey Silverman.
The second period of play remained scoreless until Moore returned the favor as Nugent scored her fourth goal of the season at 19:07. The Bears never looked back after they gained the advantage, 2-1, heading into the third period.
Late in the third period, the Friars were unable to capitalize on the power play when Krissy McManus was charged with a two-minute high sticking penalty. With 41 seconds remaining, Providence held a 6x4 power play advantage when they pulled goalkeeper Amy Thomas (Austin, Texas). The Bears' defense held strong and ended the game, 2-1.
Providence was outshot 28-12, including a 12-4 disadvantage in the third period. Thomas had 26 saves, while Silverman posted 11.
Providence will continue Ivy League play versus Yale University on Monday, November 29, at Ingalls Rink in New Haven, Conn.
