AMHERST, Mass. -- The Providence College men's hockey team was defeated, 3-2, at Massachusetts on Saturday, December 4 in Hockey East action at the Mullins Center in Amherst, Mass. With the loss the Friars fall to 5-8-1 overall and 2-6-1 in Hockey East action. UMass improved to 7-8-1 and 4-3-1 in the league.
UMass took a 1-0 first period lead as Stephen Werner fired a wrist shot from the slot that beat PC netminder David Cacciola (Burlington, Mass.) who was screened in front.
After the Minutemen increased their lead to 2-0 at 5:39 of the second period, the Friars took advantage of the power play to cut the UMass to 2-1 at 7:39. After strong fore checking, junior Torry Gajda (Westfield, Mass.) made a pass from behind the UMass net to sophomore Jamie Carroll (Andover, Conn.), whose wrist shot from just outside the crease went over Gabe Winer's right shoulder and into the net. Senior Chris Chaput (Pawtucket, R.I.) also assisted on the goal. Providence dominated much of the second period as they out shot UMass, 12-3.
UMass regained its two-goal advantage with a power-play goal at 2:09 of the third period as Marvin Degon tallied his fourth goal of the season. However, the Friars continued to battle and pulled within 3-2 at 15:58 as sophomore Bill McCreary (Howell, Mich.) recorded his team leading sixth goal of the season. Nate Meyers (Maple Glen, Pa.) and David Carpentier (Faribault, Minn.) assisted on the goal.
Cacciola recorded 25 saves in the loss, while Winer stopped 21 shots.
The Friars will return to action on Saturday, December 4 at No. 2 Boston College.
