PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College men's soccer team was defeated by the Villanova Wildcats, 3-2, in BIG EAST soccer action on Saturday, September 11 at PC's Glay Field in Providence. Villanova midfielder Jonathan Lopuski scored on a penalty kick with 11:47 remaining in the game to give the Wildcats the win.
The Wildcats wasted little time getting their offense going as they took the ball down the field and scored just 28 seconds into the game as sophomore Felix Vincent blasted a low shot past PC senior goalkeeper Jeff Newman. However, the Friars took control of the game as they scored contest's next two goals and entered halftime with a 2-1 lead. Junior Ian Wexler (Minnetonka, Minn.) headed in a cross from junior Eoin Lynch (Yarmouth, Maine) at 29:53 to even the game at 1-1. Providence quickly took the lead at 30:36 when Lynch booted in a direct kick from 20 yards in front of the goal.
Ten minutes into the second half, the Wildcats forced a 2-2 tie on a goal by junior Brett Stassfurth when he kicked in a shot from 18 yards out. The game remained tied until Lopuski converted on the penalty kick for what would prove to be the game-winning goal.
Junior Craig Bald earned the win in net for Villanova. Newman recorded four stops for the Friars.
The Friars will return to action on Tuesday, September 14 at the University of Rhode Island at 7:00 p.m.
