Women's Hockey Defeats Northeastern, 3-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (January 22, 2005) -- The Providence College women's hockey team defeated Northeastern, 3-1, on January 22, at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I.

The Huskies struck first when team captain Lori DiGiacomo assisted Marie Desrosiers for the lone first period goal at 10:21.

Freshman Rachel Crissy (Naperville, Ill.) knotted the score, 1-1, with her third goal of the season at 3:34 of the second period. Junior Karen Thatcher (Douglas, Mass.) tallied her 17th assist of the season on the play to Crissy.

The Friars never looked back after senior Rush Zimmerman netted her third game-winning goal of the season at 15:58 of the third period. Freshman Cherie Hendrickson (Boxford, Mass.) was credited with her third assist of the season on the play. Providence increased its lead when senior Hilary Greaves (Cranston, R.I.) fired a shot past Huskies' netminder Marisa Hourihan. Greaves tallied her fourth goal of the season which was assisted by Emily Gryp (Lexington, Mass.) and Katelynn Laffin (Norwell, Mass.).

The Friars dominated on the offensive side with a 45-14 shot advantage. Sophomore Lauren Florio (North Providence, R.I.) recorded her first career decision as she made 13 saves in the victory. Hourihan posted a game-high 42 saves.

Providence will travel to Northeastern tomorrow to face the Huskies on Sunday, January 23 at Matthews Arena in Boston, Mass. Face-off is schedule at 2:00 p.m.
