PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College senior Tom Gallagher's goal at 12:16 of the second period proved to be the game-winning tally as the Friars defeated the University of Connecticut, 4-3, on Tuesday, January 25 at Schneider Arena. The win ended PC's five-game winless streak and it marked PC's first victory of 2005.

Providence jumped ahead to a 4-1 lead on Gallagher's second goal of the season. Sophomore Chase Watson (Media, Pa.) won a face-off in the right circle and found Gallagher who fired a high wrist shot past UConn's Brad Smith.

In the third period, the Huskies pulled to within 4-3 at 18:22 when Bill Magnuson scored on the power play for his fifth goal of the season. UConn had a power play with 1:11 remaining and pulled Smith for an extra skater, but the Huskies could not score the equalizer.

Providence controlled much of the game as it outshot the Huskies, 45-17. David Carpentier (Faribault, Minn) opened the scoring for the Friars as he tallied his second goal of the season. Bryan Horan (Farmington, Conn.) made a pass from the right corner to Carpentier, who scored on a wrist shot from in close at 7:51 of the first period. UConn came back and tied the game at 1-1 as Matt Scherer scored on the power play with 14 seconds remaining in the period.

Providence seemingly took control of the game in the second period, scoring three goals to go ahead, 4-1. James Pemberton (Cumberland, R.I.) scored his second goal of the season, while Torry Gajda (Westfield, Mass.) added his third of the season to give the Friars a 3-1 advantage at 8:12. Gallagher's goal completed the scoring for the Friars, but the Huskies added two goals in the third period to make the score, 4-3.

In goal, Smith stopped 39 shots, while PC goalie Tyler Sims (Forth Worth, Texas) earned his third win of the season, recording 14 stops.
