LOWELL, Mass. -- Sophomore goalie Tyler Sims (Fort Worth, Texas) earned his second consecutive shutout as he made 19 saves to lead the Providence College men's hockey team to a 4-0 triumph on Saturday night at Tsongas Arena in Lowell, Mass. It marked the first time since 1976 that the Friars earned back-to-back shutouts wins. With the win, the Friars improved to 2-2-0 overall and 2-0-0 in Hockey East. UMass Lowell fell to 1-4-0 overall and 0-3-0 in league play.

After a scoreless first period, Providence took the lead at 3:10 of the second period on Colin McDonald's second goal of the season. Junior Chase Watson (Media, Pa.) made a cross ice pass to McDonald whose one timer beat UMass Lowell's netminder Peter Vetri.

The Friars increased their lead early in the third period as senior Torry Gajda (Westfield, Mass.), who had just come out of the penalty box, raced to the corner and made a pass in front to classmate Jamie Carroll (Andover, Conn.), who tapped the puck in for his first tally of the season. The Friars kept the pressure and were rewarded at 4:30, as Gajda fired a high wrist shot from the right faceoff circle over Vetri's left shoulder to make the score, 3-0.

Freshman Cody Wild of North Providence, R.I. gave the Friars a 4-0 lead on the power play at 13:44 as he pounced on a rebound from in close.

Sims, who made 24 saves last night in a 3-0 win in Providence, also became the first Friar goalie to earn back-to-back shutouts.

The Friars are back in action on Friday, October 28 when they travel to North Andover, Mass. to play Merrimack.
