MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- The Providence College men's soccer team was defeated by West Virginia, 1-0, in BIG EAST men's soccer action on Saturday, October 22 at Morgantown, W.Va. Jarrod Smith scored the only goal of the game in the 59th minute to give the Mountaineers the win.
After a scoreless first half in which the WVU held a 6-5 shot advantage, the Mountaineers got on the scoreboard 13 minutes into the second half. Smith gathered a pass from Matt Anstey on the right side and blasted in a shot. Despite outshooting the Mountaineers, 5-4, in the second half, the Friars were not able to score. It marked just the second time this season that the Friars were held scoreless and the first time that they lost consecutive games (PC was defeated by Notre Dame on Wednesday).
Friar junior goalkeeper Chris Konopka (Toms River, N.J.) recorded two saves in 90 minutes of action.
Providence will return to action on Tuesday, October 25 versus Harvard at PC's Glay Field at 2:30 p.m.
