BURLINGTON, Vt. -- The Providence College men's hockey team was defeated by No. 8 Vermont on Friday, November 11 at Gutterson Fieldhouse in Burlington, Vt. With the loss, the Friars drop to 5-4 overall and 5-2 in Hockey East. Vermont improves to 8-1-0 overall and 2-1 in league play.
Playing in their first-ever home Hockey East game, the Catamounts came out energized in the first period as they had several scoring chances. However, the Friars struck first at 8:42 as senior Nate Meyers (Maple Glen, Pa.) and junior Bryan Horan (Farmington, Conn.) skated in on a two-on-one breakaway. Meyers fired a wrist shot that hit Vermont goalie Joe Fallon's pad and trickled into the net. The lead was short-lived as Chris Myers took advantage of a rebound in front and fired the puck into the empty net at 11:09 to tie the game at 1-1.
Vermont took its first lead of the night at 4:35 of the second period on a power-play goal by Jeff Corey who was able to poke the puck into the net after a scrum in front. The Friars responded with a power-play goal of their own at 6:01. Sophomore Jon Rheault (Deering, N.H.) scored off a wrist shot from the side of the crease to tie game at 2-2. However, the Catamounts scored two goals in a span of 1:29 to take a 4-2 advantage. Brady Leisenring scored off a slap shot from the right faceoff circle at 10:03, while Corey connected on his second goal of the night at 11:32.
The Catamounts added two more goals in the third period to seal the win. In goal, PC goalie Tyler Sims (Fort Worth, Texas) made 31 saves, while Fallon stopped 18 shots for UVM.
The Friars are back in action on Tuesday, November 15 at Northeastern.
