PROVIDENCE R.I. -- The Providence College women's ice hockey team toppled Yale University, 3-1, on Friday, November 25 at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I. Senior Ashley Payton netted her second consecutive game-winning goal that put Providence on a four-game winning streak. The Friars improve to 7-3-2 overall and remain undefeated at Schneider Arena with a 6-0-2 mark at home.
Sarah Tittman put Yale on the scoreboard first with a goal at 11:39 assisted by Kristin Savard. In the second period of play junior Sonny Watrous (Albuquerque, N.M.) scored her seventh goal of the season with an assist from freshman Erin Normore (Cambridge, Ontario) and sophomore Caitlin Malboeuf (Fairfield, Vt.). Malboeuf earned her first collegiate point on the play. At 19:23, the Friars never looked back with a power play goal by Ashley Payton (Chesterfield, Mo.) with assists from Watrous and senior Karen Thatcher (Douglas, Mass.).
Junior Kristin Gigliotti (Sauquoit, N.Y.) capped off the night with an empty-netter at 19:19 with the assist from Payton. With the goal Gigliotti improves to a career-high nine-game scoring-streak.
Senior netminder Jana Bugden (Corner Brook, Newfoundland) posted 23 saves, while Sarah Love recorded 29 saves.
The Friars out shot the Bulldogs, 32-24. Providence went two-for-seven on the power play, and seven-for-seven on the penalty kill.
The Friars will resume Ivy League action Saturday, November 26 at Schneider Arena in the 11th annual Mayor's Cup against Brown University at 7:00 p.m.
