PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Sophomore Colin McDonald (Wethersfield, Conn.) scored two third-period goals as the Providence College men's hockey team closed out their home schedule with a 4-2 victory over Merrimack on Saturday, February 26 at Schneider Arena.

Trailing 2-1 in the third period, McDonald scored both of his goals in a span of 2:12 as Providence moved into sole possession of seventh-place in Hockey East, two points ahead of UMass. PC is now 10-19-4 overall and 5-14-4 in league play, while Merrimack fell to 8-25-2 overall and 1-21-1 in Hockey East. The win also marked the first time since October that the Friars won two consecutive games.

McDonald tied the game at 7:37 and gave the Friars the lead for good at 9:49 on the power play. McDonald took a pass from the right face-off circle from classmate Bill McCreary (Howell, Mich.) and fired a high slap shot past Jim Healey. Senior David Carpentier (Faribault, Minn.) made the most of his senior day as he gave the Friars some insurance, scoring his fourth goal of the season at 16:33 to make the score, 4-2.

Providence led 1-0 as Jamie Carroll (Andover, Conn.) scored on the power play at 4:17 of the second period. However, the Warriors bounced back with two power-play goals to take a 2-1 lead. Matt Johnson tallied his 10th goal of the season at 7:32, while Jeff Caron scored on a high slap shot at 17:56.

Both teams were strong on the man advantage with Merrimack going 2-for-6, while Providence converted on two of its five chances. In goal, Healey stopped 30 shots for the Warriors, while David Cacciola (Burlington, Mass.) and senior Mike Wolfe (Milford, Conn.) combined to make 20 saves.
