PROVIDENCE R.I. -- The Providence College women's ice hockey team downed Minnesota State, 6-2, on Sunday, January 15 at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I. The Friars went four-for-seven on the power play and added a short-hander by sophomore Rachel Crissy (Naperville, Ill.). Senior Karen Thatcher (Douglas, Mass.) amassed 153 career points and is one of only 14 other Friars to reach the 150-point milestone.

Sophomore Kathleen Smith (Waterloo, Ontario) enjoyed a career-high four-point game and opened up her scoring assault at 17:47 with a power play goal. Thatcher and junior Kristin Gigliotti (Sauquoit, N.Y.) assisted Smith on the play. With the assist, Thatcher earned her 150th career point. At 19:07, Thatcher continued her offensive aggressiveness with a power play goal assisted by senior Ashley Payton (Chesterfield, Mo.) and Smith.

Payton put Providence up 3-0, going three-for-three on the power play, with a goal at 2:57 of the second period. Junior Sonny Watrous (Albuquerque, N.M.) and freshman Erin Normore (Ontario, Canada) assisted on the power play. Thatcher and Watrous assisted Smith on the only even-strength goal of the game. At 9:13, Smtih earned her second assist of the night when Crissy scored her first career short-hander. Crissy's second goal of the season gave the Friars a 5-0 advantage.

At 16:48, the Mavericks prevented a shutout with a power play goal by Jodi Helminen, her first goal of the season. Helminen was assisted by Amber Sharratt and Amanda Stohr. Gigliotti posted her 12th goal of the season, with assists from Thatcher and Payton at 13:51 of the third period. With the assist, Payton is one point shy of reaching the 100-point milestone as she has 99 career points on 43 goals and 56 assists. At 19:22, Amanda Stohr recorded her fifth goal of the season with assists from Kristina Bunker and Shera Vis.

Providence outshout Minnesota State, 31-26. The Friars went four-for-seven on the power play, and four-for-six on the penalty kill. Senior netminder Jana Bugden (Corner Brook, Newfoundland) recorded 24 saves in 59:49 minutes of action. Britni Kehler posted 25 saves in net for the Mavericks.

The Friars will play game-five of their five-game home stand when they host conference foe Northeastern on Saturday, January 21 at PC's Schneider Arena at 2:00 p.m.
