PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Junior Jon Rheault (Deering, N.H.) scored two goals to lead the Providence College men's hockey team to a 4-2 win over St. Lawrence Saturday night at Schneider Arena. The Friars improved to 1-1 and the Saints fell to 1-2 on the season.

Providence struck first at the 9:33 mark of the first period when Rheault connected on his first goal of the season. Sophomore John Mori (Westport, Conn.) and junior Marc Bastarache (Lynn, Mass.) were credited with assists on the play. The Saints evened the score at 5:16 of the second period as they capitalized on the power play. Kevin DeVirgilio connected on his first tally of the season as he scored from right in front.

The Friars regained the lead six minutes later when sophomore Kyle Laughlin (Gambrills, Md.) played the puck ahead to senior Tony Zancanaro (Trenton, Mich.) who had a two-on-none breakaway with classmate Colin McDonald (Wethersfield, Conn.). Zancanaro slid a pass to McDonald who found the open net at 11:40.

The lead increased to 3-1 at 5:47 of the third period as Rheault scored a short-handed goal. Rheault stole the puck at PC's blue line and was able to fend off a defender before beating St. Lawrence goalie Kain Tisi high to the stick side. Zancanaro added an empty-net goal at 18:13 as the Friars moved ahead, 4-1. The Saints pulled to within, 4-2, 10 seconds later as Jeremiah Cunningham scored from in close, but it was not enough as PC held on for the win.

PC freshman netminder Ryan Simpson (Bow, N.H.), who was making his collegiate debut, stopped 22 shots to earn the win. Tisi made 31 saves for St. Lawrence.
