FRIARS HOST UCONN... The Friars will seek their fourth consecutive victory and eight of their last nine when they host the UConn Huskies on Tuesday, October 3 at 3:00 p.m. at PC's Glay Field.
FRIAR QUICK NOTES... Providence (8-2, 5-1 BIG EAST) is off to its best start since 1984 when it started the season with a 9-1 mark. PC's eight wins this season are the most since the 1999 team posted an 8-8-1 mark. In addition, the five BIG EAST victories are the most conference triumphs since the 2002 team posted a 5-5-1 mark. The Friars have won seven of their last eight matches, including three consecutive victories. PC is coming off a 4-0 victory over Georgetown on September 30. The four goals are the most in a league match by a PC team since 2002. Freshman Jonathan Medcalf (Tulsa, Okla.) leads the Friars in scoring with five goals, while junior Alex Bury (Shresbury, Mass.) and sophomore Kevin Neumen (Miller Place, N.Y.) have three goals and two assists each. Providence will seek its first win over UConn since 1997 when they posted a 2-1 overtime victory on September 10 in Providence.
WHAT'S NEXT... Following Tuesday's match, the Friars will play their third consecutive home match on Saturday, October 7 against BIG EAST foe Pittsburgh.
SCOUTING THE HUSKIES... UConn enters Tuesday's match after suffering a 3-0 loss against ninth-ranked West Virginia on Saturday, September 30 in Storrs, Conn. Prior to the loss, the Huskies were on a seven-match unbeaten streak, including four consecutive victories. Sophomore O'Brian White leads the Huskies in scoring with five goals and four assists, while classmate Akeem Priestley has three goals and four assists. Freshman goalie Matt Sangeloty has played in every match and has allowed just 11 goals in 14 contests.
FRIARS CLIMB TO SECOND PLACE IN THE BIG EAST... The Friars are currently 5-1 (15 points) in the BIG EAST Conference, which is good for second place in the Blue Division, behind first-place West Virginia (5-0-1). The 5-1 mark (.833) is the second best record among the 16 teams in the conference. Cincinnati leads the Red Division with a 5-2 mark (15 points).
THE UCONN-PROVIDENCE COLLEGE SERIES... In 31 all-time meetings against the Huskies, the Friars have a 3-26-2 record. Providence's last victory over UConn was on September 10, 1997, a 2-1 overtime triumph in Providence. Last season, the Huskies rallied to defeat the Friars, 3-2, in overtime. Tim Ritter (Weston, Mass.) scored twice for the Friars, but it was not enough as PC suffered its first defeat of the season after going unbeaten in its first nine matches. Chukwudi Chijindu also scored twice for the Huskies, including the match winner 8:23 into overtime. UConn has won the last seven meetings beween the two teams.
PC RANKED 23RD IN COLLEGE SOCCER NEWS POLL... PC is ranked 23rd in the nation according to the College Soccer News Top-30 Poll released on Sunday, October 1. The Friars, who have an 8-2 overall record and a 5-1 BIG EAST mark, are off to their best start since 1984. It marks the first time since last season that the Friars are ranked in the top-30 poll. Last season, PC was ranked as high as 27th.
HOME-SWEET-HOME... Providence has posted a 4-1 record on its home pitch this season, while outscoring its opponents, 14-4. PC's lone home loss this season was a 2-1 non-conference defeat against the University of Rhode Island on August 28. In their three BIG EAST home matches, the Friars have a 3-0 mark and have outscored their opponets, 9-1. Most recently, the Friars defeated Georgetown, 4-0, on Saturday, September 30. It marked the most goals scored by a PC team in a BIG EAST match since November 2, 2002 when the Friars scored four times in a win over Pittsburgh.
MEDCALF NAMED BIG EAST ROOKIE OF THE WEEK FOR SECOND CONSECUTIVE WEEK... Freshman forward Jonathan Medcalf (Tulsa, Okla.) was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week on Monday, October 2. It marks the second consecutive week that Medcalf has earned the honor. He also is the only rookie in the BIG EAST to earn the award twice this season. In addition, sophomore forward Timothy Ritter (Weston, Mass.) was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll. On Tuesday, September 26, Medcalf scored the match-winning goal with 4:21 remaining to lift the Friars to a 3-2 victory at Holy Cross. He also capped off the scoring in a 4-0 victory over Georgetown on Saturday, September 30. Medcalf has scored one goal in four of the last five matches, including three consecutive contests. He leads the team in scoring with five goals.Ritter scored the first goal of the match in PC's 3-2 win at Holy Cross. He also scored the first goal of the match and assisted on the second goal as the Friars went on to defeat Georgetown, 4-0.
FRIARS SCORE FIRST... In eight of its first 10 matches this season, Providence has scored first. The only two matches in which the Friars did not strike first was in a 3-2 win at Syracuse on September 14 and a 1-0 overtime loss at St. John's on September 17.
SCORING SPURT... The Friars, who scored 27 goals in 20 matches last season, have already scored 22 goals through 10 contests this season. The PC record for most goals in one season is 60, which was established in 1983. In addition, the Friars already have 10 different goal scorers this season, one more than they had all of last season. The Friars also have seven players with two goals or more.
FRIARS SEEK BACK-TO-BACK WINNING SEASONS... The Friars, who posted a 7-4-9 overall record during the 2005 season, have an 8-2 mark this season and are aiming for consecutive winning seasons. The last time Providence College had back-to-back winning seasons was 1986-87. In 1986, PC recorded 9-8 record and followed that up with a 9-7-1 mark in 1987. In 1998-99, the Friars posted .500 records as they went 9-9-1 in 1998 and 8-8-1 in 1999.
MEDCALF ON SCORING STREAK... Freshman forward Jonathan Medcalf (Tulsa, Okla.) has scored a goal in four of the last five matches, including each of the last three contests. In two of those matches, Medcalf's goals have been match winners. On September, 23, Medcalf recorded the lone goal in a 1-0 BIG EAST victory at Marquette. On September 26, he broke a 2-2 draw, scoring with 4:21 remaining in the second half to lead the Friars to a 3-2 win at Holy Cross. Most recently, Medcalf scored in a 4-0 home victory against Georgetown on September 30. After his goal against Marquette, Medcalf was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week.
FRIARS NOT WORKING OVERTIME THIS SEASON... After playing in a NCAA record 12 overtime matches and also recording a NCAA mark of nine ties last season, the Friars have played in just one overtime match this season (a 1-0 loss at St. John's on Sep. 17). Providence also came close to going into overtime against the Syracuse Orange on September 14, but sophomore Kevin Neumen (Miller Place, N.Y.) scored the match-winning tally with three seconds left in regulation to lift PC to a 3-2 win.
FRIARS SCORE OFF SET PLAYS... Of the 22 goals scored by Providence this season, 10 have come on set plays. The Friars have scored four goals off corner kicks, two off direct free kicks and one via a penalty shot. The other three goals came via indirect free kicks.
MASTER OF SET PIECES... Junior Alex Bury's (Shrewsbury, Mass.) career-high three goals this season have all come on set plays. On August 28, Bury scored on a direct free kick from 20 yards out against the University of Rhode Island. On Friday, September 8, Bury converted a penalty kick in a BIG EAST opening victory over Villanova. His goal proved to be the match winner. Bury also scored on a direct free kick from 18 yards out in a 2-0 triumph over Rutgers on September 10. He is tied for second on the team with his three goals this season.
KONOPKA CONTRIBUTING AT BOTH ENDS... In addition to posting impressive numbers in goal this season, PC senior goalkeeper Chris Konopka (Toms River, N.J.) has recorded two assists this season. Konopka was credited with an assist on the match-winning goal at Syracuse on September 14 as the Friars scored with three seconds left in regulation. Konopka also had an assist in a 4-0 victory over Georgetown on September 30. He has started nine of the 10 matches and has posted a 0.77 goals against average and a .844 save percentage.
STREAK ENDS FOR KONOPKA... Senior goalkeeper Chris Konopka (Toms River, N.J.), who did not play in PC's 3-2 win at Holy Cross on September 26, ended his streak of consecutive minutes played. Konopka had played in 2745:08, including all 2020:38 during the 2005 season. Konopka returned to the starting lineup on Saturday, September 30 as he earned the shutout in a 4-0 win over Georgetown.
ROAD WARRIORS... Providence has won four of its first five road matches this season, including a 3-2 triumph at Holy Cross on Tuesday, September 26. The Friars have outscored their opponents, 8-5, in road matches this season. Last season, the Friars posted a 4-3-6 record in matches away from PC's Glay Field.
A SEASON TO REMEMBER... The Friars finished the 2005 season with a 7-4-9 mark, which represented a 9.5 game improvement from 2004 and the 10th best turnaround in NCAA history. The Friars also advanced to the conference semifinal of the BIG EAST tournament, for the second time in three years, where they tied nationally ranked USF before being eliminated in a penalty kick shootout. PC then earned its second ever NCAA Tournament playoff berth, and first ever NCAA tournament victory by beating 13th ranked Hofstra University. However, their season came to an end when the team was defeated in the second round by the second ranked team in the NCAA tournament, the North Carolina Tar Heels.
