Women's Basketball Defeats Manhattan, 52-46, In Season Opener

RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Providence College women's basketball team opened the 2006-07 season with a 52-46 victory over Manhattan College on Friday, November 10 at Draddy Gymnasium in Riverdale, N.Y. Senior Shauna Snyder (Albuquerque, N.M.) led all scorers with 14 points. Sophomore Chelsea Marandola (Johnston, R.I.) netted 12 points in the win.
The Friars went into halftime with a 25-18 lead behind a nine-point effort from senior Snyder. Kelly Regan led the offense for Manhattan in the opening 20 minutes with six points.
Manhattan went on a 16-7 run over the first 7:20 of the second half to take its first lead of the game (34-33) with 11:58 remaining in the game. However, the Friars would respond down the stretch to pull out the six-point win (52-46).
Snyder added five rebound and a game-high four steals on the night. Marandola grabbed six rebounds and recorded one assist, one blocked shot and one steal. Junior Danielle Howard (Willingboro, N.J.) pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds for the Friars. Sophomore Shantee Darrian (Trenton, N.J.) grabbed seven boards and added six points, one assist, one block and one steal.
Manhattan was led offensively by Joann Nwafili, who posted 14 points. Nwafili also tallied eight rebounds, two assists and one steal. Regan recorded a team-high nine rebounds and chipped in nine points.
Providence (1-0) returns to action on Sunday, November 12 against cross-city rival Brown at 2:00 p.m. The game will be played at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium on the campus of Providence College in Providence, R.I.
