AMHERST, Mass. -- The Providence College men's hockey team was defeated, 4-1, at UMass Friday night at the Mullins Center in Amherst, Mass. Two early second period goals by the Minutemen proved to be the difference as they improved to 3-1-1 and 2-1-0 in Hockey East action. The Friars fell to 2-5-1 and 1-2-1 in league play.

The Minutemen struck first at the 10:59 mark of the first period when they capitalized on their first power play. Cory Quirk snapped a wrist shot from the bottom of the right face off circle that beat PC junior goalie Tyler Sims (Grand Blanc, Mich.). UMass increased its lead to 2-0 early in the second period when Chris Capraro gained possession of the puck in the slot and waited for Sims to commit before tucking the puck into the empty net at 1:19. Moments later, UMass tacked on another goal when P.J. Fenton tapped in his second goal season off passes from Will Ortiz and Martin Nolet at 3:23. PC got on the board at 6:26 as they also converted on their first power play opportunity. Senior Colin McDonald (Wethersfield, Conn.) set up classmate Jamie Carroll (Andover, Conn.), who ripped a one timer from the slot. Freshman John Cavanagh (Warwick, R.I.) also assisted on the goal.

UMass added an empty netter at 18:23 to seal the win. PC outshot the Minutemen, 34-22, but Jon Quick stopped 33 of the shots. Sims finished with 19 saves.

The two teams faceoff again tomorrow night at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I.
