MILWAUKEE, Wisc. -- Freshman forward Jonathan Medcalf (Tulsa, Okla.) scored the lone goal of the match in the 40th minute to lead the Providence College men's soccer team (6-2, 4-1 BIG EAST) to a 1-0 victory over Marquette (1-7-1, 0-4-0 BIG EAST) Saturday afternoon in a BIG EAST battle at Valley Fields in Milwaukee, Wis.
Medcalf's goal came at the 39:09 mark when he took a cross at the near post from junior Michael Narciso (Livingston, N.J.) and slotted the ball past Golden Eagles' goalkeeper Matt Pyzdrowski. The goal also was Medcalf's third of his rookie campaign, which matches the team lead this season with junior Alex Bury (Shrewsbury, Mass.).
For the Friars, who were playing their first ever match against the Golden Eagles, it marked their fourth BIG EAST triumph this season, which is the most conference wins since 2003, when they also posted four victories. Senior tri-captain Chris Konopka (Toms River, N.J.) earned his third shutout of the season as he made two saves.
Providence is back in action on Tuesday, September 26 with a non-conference match at Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass.
