BOSTON, MASS. - The Providence College field hockey team recorded its fifth-consecutive victory to start the 2006 season (5-0) by defeating 18th-ranked Northeastern on Friday, September 8 in Boston, Mass. Providence improves to 2-0 this season versus nationally ranked opponents. On September 3, PC defeated 8th-ranked Michigan, 2-1. Seniors Lauren Sickel (Plaistow, N.H.) and Melissa McGow (Branford, Conn.) each recorded one goal and one assist to pace the Friars with three points.

Providence took a 1-0 lead at the three-minute mark (3:00) as freshman Nellie Poulin (Oakland, Maine) tipped in an initial shot from Sickel during a penalty corner. Sickel got credit for the assist on the play. Northeastern answered to tie the game, 1-1, as Stephanie Casper connected on a goal off a feed from Whitney Shean at 23:35. Providence regained the lead (2-1) as McGow tallied an unassisted goal in the 30th minute (29:12). The Friars took their one-goal advantage into halftime.

In the second half, Providence took a 3-1 lead as Sickel fired a direct shot past Northeastern's keeper on a penalty corner. Senior Emily Ewens (Vancouver, B.C.) and McGow were credited with the assists. The score remained, 3-1, in PC's favor until Northeastern's Ashley Bascetta scored a goal off a pass from Casper at 53:51. Both teams were scoreless the remaining 16:09 of the game, as Providence held on for its fifth victory of the year.

Freshman goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.) earned the victory for PC in the cage with four saves. Northeastern's Colleen Duffy allowed all three Friar goals before being relieved in the cage by Meaghan Dorsi.

Northeastern outshot Providence, 10-8, but Providence made the most of their opportunities with a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal. The Huskies held a decisive edge in penalty corners at 12-2. Providence scored on each of its penalty corner opportunities.

Providence (5-0) will return to action on Sunday, September 10 against Monmouth in a non-conference match-up. The game will be played at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I. and will begin at 1:00 p.m.
