Newark, N.J. - The Providence College volleyball fell to the New Jersey Institute of Technology, 3-2 on Friday, October 26. The Highlanders won the match with scores of 30-16, 29-31, 31-33, 30-19 and 15-11. With the loss Providence falls to 15-9.
Junior Elizabeth Flynn (Bellerose, N.Y.) led three Friars in double-figure kills with 15. Flynn added five total blocks. Senior Sarah Fleming (Saint Paul, Minn.) recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs. Junior Jeanette Toney (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tallied 11 kills and a match-high nine total blocks. Junior setter Sara Sheehan (West Chester, Pa.) recorded 45 assists and three aces. Coming into this evening's match, Sheehan is ranked 47th in the country with a .53 service aces per game.
The Highlanders came out strong in front of the home crowd and took game one easily by the score of 30-16. In game two, the Friars roared back from a 27-23 deficit to put the game away on a Fleming kill, 31-29. Providence carried the momentum into the third game but fell behind 23-17 before storming back for another hard fought 33-31 win. NJIT found themselves again in the fourth game handling the pressure of being down two games to one. The Highlanders took game four, 30-19. The fifth game was back and forth with the game knotted at 11-11, NJIT took the match with four straight points.
Providence will remain in New Jersey to continue action on Saturday, October 27 with two matches at the New Jersey Institute of Technology Tournament. The Friars will play Sacred Heart at noon followed by a match with Howard.
