BOSTON, Mass. - Northeastern scored twice in the first period and Brad Thiessen made 37 saves as the Huskies defeated the Providence College men's hockey team, 3-0, Friday night at Matthews Arena.
Northeastern used its special teams to take a 2-0 first period lead. The Friars were on a four-on-three power play, but the Huskies' Bryan Esner stole a pass in the NU zone and skated in on a breakaway before tucking the puck past PC goalie Tyler Sims (Grand Blanc, Mich.) at the 3:00 minute mark. Northeastern increased its lead to 2-0, scoring on the power play with two-tenths of a second left in the period. Ryan Ginand was able to re-direct a shot from the point and into the net at 19:59.
In the second period, the Friars held a 19-8 shot advantage but were unable to score. The Huskies took advantage of another power play and added to their lead when Joe Santilli scored his second goal of the season at 12:12.
The Friars finished with a 37-23 shot advantage. Sophomore Chris Mannix (Hubbardston, Mass.), who was making his second career appearance, made 15 saves.
