Box Score

Providence, R.I. - The Providence College women's ice hockey team defeated the University of Vermont, 4-2. Four Friars scored as Providence earned their first conference victory. Providence now stands at 2-4-0 (1-1-0 HOCKEY EAST), while Vermont falls to 2-2-0 (0-2-0 HOCKEY EAST).

The first 10 minutes saw the Friars pressure Vermont hard and often as they had a quick, 6-1, advantage in shots but were unable to finish their chances. Providence was able to dodge a bullet and kill off a 5-on-3 power-play for 57 seconds at the end of the first period. After 20 minutes, the score was tied, 0-0, with the Friars holding the advantage in shots, 8-7.

In a wild second period in which six goals were scored, the Friars were able to put in four tallies. At 13:29 of the second period, Providence earned a power-play and made sure to capitalize. Freshman Laura Veharanta (La Verne, Calif.) received a pass on the right side of the net from classmate Jennifer Friedman and buried the puck into the back of the net for her fourth goal of the season. Friedman earned her first point as a friar with the assist.

At the start of what would be three goals in 63 seconds, Providence went up, 2-0, at 11:30 when Jackie Duncan (Kitchener, Ontario) knocked in the rebound off a shot from sophomore Amber Yung (Rockville, Va.) for her first goal of the season. The goal was also assisted by Ashley Cottrell (Sterling Heights, Mich.). Vermont answered just 49 seconds later with a goal at 10:41 from captain Chelsea Furlani. The assists went to Brittany Nelson and Peggy Wakeham. It only took 14 seconds for PC to respond when Ruff put home her second goal of the season after passes from Jean O'Neill (Strafford, Pa.) and Duncan.

UVM made it 3-2 when Furlani netted her second power-play goal of the game at 1:41. The assists went to Shannon Bellefeuille and Nelson. The Friars would increase the lead to 4-2 with only 11 seconds remaining in the period when junior Arianna Rigano pounced on a loose puck in front of the Catamount net following a shot from Erin Normore (Cambridge, Ontario). Abby Gauthier also registered an assist on the play. The goal was the first as a Friar for Rigano.

Neither team was able to score in the third period as Providence held off the Catamounts to earn the victory, 4-2.

Providence netminder Genevieve Lacasse finished with 25 saves and improves to 2-2 on the season while Vermont goaltender Kristen Olychuck stopped 19 Friar shots but falls to 1-2 on the year.
