CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Providence College men's soccer team was defeated by Harvard, 3-1, Tuesday afternoon at Cumnock Turf Field in Cambridge, Mass. With the loss, the Friars fell to 7-6-3, while Harvard improved to 9-3-0.
The Friars took the lead in the 36th minute as senior Ryan Maduro (Bristol, R.I.) converted a penalty kick. It marked his second goal of the season and the 49th point of his career, which moves him into eighth place all-time at Providence College. However, Harvard responded in the 42nd minute as Andre Akpan scored off a header after a cross from Michael Fucito.
The Crimson took the lead for good in the 63rd minute as they were awarded a penalty kick. John Stamatis stepped up and converted from the penalty spot marking his fourth goal of the season. Fucito capped off the scoring in the 71st minute to give Harvard a 3-1 edge.
The Friars will close out the regular season on Saturday, November 1 with a crucial home BIG EAST Conference match against Pittsburgh at 1:00 p.m. on senior day. The Friars will be looking to clinch their fourth consecutive BIG EAST Championship berth and earn home field advantage for the Championship First Round.
