PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's soccer team (6-6-3, 3-4-2 BIG EAST) hosted Marquette in a BIG EAST game at Glay field and came away with a 1-0 victory. Junior Matt Marcin (Wilmington, Del.) put home the game-winning goal in the 55th minute and Tim Murray (Haverhill, Mass.) made three saves to earn his seventh shutout of the season.
Neither team was able to score in the opening 45 minutes with both teams taking four shots. Marcin nearly put home the opener in the 30th minute but his shot from the top of the box was saved by Marquette keeper Matt Pyzdrowski. Senior Tim Ritter (Weston, Mass.) was in all alone with Pyzdrowski seven minutes later but his toe poke from eight yards out was denied by a sliding Marquette defender.
With both teams increasing the intensity in the second half, the Friars jumped on top in the 55th minute when sophomore Daniel Fabian (Southbury, Conn.) slid a through-ball to Marcin at the top left corner of the box. Marcin collected the pass, shielding his defender from the ball, and slid a shot into the bottom left corner of the net for his third tally of the season. Fabian earned his first assist of the season on the play. Marquette pushed for the equalizer late in the second but the Friar defense held up as PC came away with the 1-0 victory.
Providence is back in action on Wednesday, October 28 when they travel to Morgantown, W. Va. for a BIG EAST contest with the Mountaineers. Kick off is set for 7:00 p.m.
