PROVIDENCE TO FACE CONNECTICUT
The Providence College men's soccer team will look to extend its unbeaten streak to four games when it travels to the University of Connecticut for a BIG EAST Conference match on Tuesday, October 6 at 7:00 p.m. at Morrone Stadium in Storrs, Conn.
PROVIDENCE QUICK NOTES
• The Friars have posted a 2-0-1 record in their last three matches. • The 3-0 victory over Pittsburgh on Saturday marked the best offensive output for the Friars this season. The Friars, who had not scored more than one goal in a game, scored twice in the first 14 minutes of the match against the Panthers. • Sophomore Daniel Fabian (Southbury, Conn.) scored a career-high two goals against Pitt, while Andrew Sousa (Fall River, Mass.) scored the first goal of the match to lead the Friars. • The win was the first road BIG EAST victory of the season for the Friars. Overall, Providence is 2-3 in road matches this season. • PC goalkeeper Tim Murray (Haverhill, Mass.) has not allowed a goal in the last 376:16. • Senior Tim Ritter (Weston, Mass.) leads the team in scoring with three goals, all of which have been game winners. • Providence has a 3-0-1 record at home this season and has yet to allow a goal at Glay Field. Following the match at UConn, Providence will play five-consecutive home games.
SERIES HISTORY VERSUS UCONN
In 34 all-time meetings against the Huskies, the Friars have a 4-28-2 record. Last season, the Friars posted a 1-0 win over the Huskies as Matt Marcin (Wilmington, Del.) scored the lone goal of the match. Prior to last season, Providence's last victory over UConn was on September 10, 1997, a 2-1 overtime triumph in Providence. PC is seeking its first win in Storrs, Conn. since October 24, 1984. In 2005, the Huskies rallied to defeat the Friars, 3-2, in overtime at Morrone Stadium. Tim Ritter (Weston, Mass.) scored twice for the Friars, but it was not enough as PC suffered its first defeat of the season after going unbeaten in its first nine matches.
SCOUTING UCONN
No. 13 UConn sits atop the BIG EAST Blue Division standings after defeating No. 13 Georgetown, 1-0, on Saturday, October 3 to claim its third-consecutive victory. Tony Cascio scored the lone goal of the match in the 56th minute to lead the Huskies, who outshot the Hoyas, 15-6. Cascio leads the team in scoring with three goals and two assists, while Alan Ponce is second with two goals and two assists. In goal, Josh Ford has played in all nine matches and has allowed just six goals. He also has a 0.63 goals against average and six shutouts.
FRIARS ON THE ROAD
The Friars have posted a 2-3 record on the road this season, including a 1-2 mark in BIG EAST Conference road matches. The Friars opened the regular season with a 1-0 double overtime victory at Sacred Heart. Providence then was defeated in its next three road matches, including a 3-0 loss at No. 14 Boston University on September 7. PC then captured its first BIG EAST road win on Saturday, October 3 with a 3-0 triumph at Pittsburgh.
RITTER MOVING UP THE PROVIDENCE SCORING CHART
Senior Tim Ritter (Weston, Mass.) has 17 goals and 14 assists for 49 career points at Providence College. The 49 points ranks ninth all-time at Providence behind former Friar All-American Ryan Maduro `09 who finished his career with 50 points (14 goals, 22 assists). This season, Ritter leads the team with three goals. MURRAY RACKING UP THE SHUTOUTS Providence goalkeeper Tim Murray (Haverhill, Mass.) has recorded six shutouts in nine games this season. He has allowed just six goals this season and has a 0.62 goals against average. In addition, Murray has 24 career shutouts, which is a Providence College record.
FRIARS DEFEAT PITTSBURGH
Providence scored twice early in the first half and defeated Pittsburgh, 3-0, on Saturday, October 3 in a BIG EAST Conference match at Founders Field in Indianola, Pa. With the win, the Friars improved to 5-3-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the BIG EAST. The Friars needed only 4:31 to take a 1-0 lead as junior Andrew Sousa (Fall River, Mass.) scored his first goal of the season. Less than 10 minutes later, Providence added to its lead when sophomore Daniel Fabian (Southbury, Conn.) scored the first of his two goals on the afternoon in the 14th minute. Junior Matt Marcin (Wilmington, Del.) assisted on the goal. Fabian sealed the win for the Friars in the 82nd minute when he scored from five yards out off a rebound. Senior Sean Bakhtiari (Hampstead, N.H.) assisted on the goal as he recorded his first career point. The three goals is the highest scoring output for the Friars since November 1, 2008 when they scored three times in a 3-0 victory over Pittsburgh at PC's Glay Field. Goalkeeper Tim Murray (Haverhill, Mass.) added to his shutout total as he made three saves to pick up his sixth clean sheet this season and the 24th of his career. Murray has not allowed a goal in the last 376:16.
PROVIDENCE AGAINST RANKED TEAMS
The Friars have posted a 0-1-1 record against ranked teams this season. On September 7, the Friars were defeated at No. 14 Boston University, 3-0. The Friars also tied No. 18 St. John's on September 27. Last season, the Friars posted a 3-5 record against ranked teams, including a 1-0 victory against fourth-ranked Boston College.
CONNECTICUT CONNECTION
Two members of the Providence College men's soccer team hail from the state of Connecticut. Nick Cianci (West Hartford) and Daniel Fabian (Southbury) have been key contributors for the Friars this season. Cianci has started all nine matches and has one goal and one assist. Last season, Cianci played in four matches and scored one goal before sustaining a season-ending injury. Fabian played in 12 matches last season and scored one goal. This season, Fabian has two goals, both coming in a 3-0 win at Pittsburgh on Saturday.
BIG EAST WEEKLY HONORS
Three Friars have earned BIG EAST weekly honors this season. On September 7, Tim Ritter was named Offensive Player of the Week, while Tim Murray was named to the honor roll. Murray also was named to the honor roll on September 28. Most recently, Fabian was named to the honor roll on October 5.
