STORRS, Conn. - - The University of Connecticut scored three times in the first half and defeated the Providence College men's soccer team, 4-0, Tuesday night in a BIG EAST Conference match at Morrone Stadium in Storrs, Conn.
The Huskies (6-2-2, 5-1-0 BIG EAST) struck in the seventh minute when Stephane Diop dribbled his way through the middle and played a pass to Tony Cascio, who then chipped a pass over the top to Carlos Alvarez. Alvarez's first effort was thwarted but a Providence defender, but he was able to regain possession of the ball and fire a low right-footed shot from eight yards out into the right corner. The Huskies doubled their lead in the 19th minute when Alvarez played a cross from the right wing and Alan Ponce volleyed the ball into the net from six yards out. UConn increased its lead to 3-0 just 2:21 later. Cascio gained possession of the ball at the top right corner of the box and buried a right-footed shot into the upper left corner of the net.
The Friars (5-4-1, 2-3-1 BIG EAST) managed two shots in the first half as junior Matt Marcin (Wilmington, Del.) accounted for both attempts. The Friars nearly got on the scoreboard in the 49th minute when junior Toussaint McClure's (Atlanta, Ga.) left-footed shot from 20 yards out missed just wide. However, Cascio added his second of the night in the 60th minute as his left-footed strike from 18 yards hit the right post and bounced into the net. The Friars came close again in the 76th minute when a through ball was played to freshman Marc Cintron (Piscataway, N.J.) but his shot was turned aside by UConn goalkeeper Josh Ford.
PC junior goalie Jhojan Obando (Kissimmee, Fla.) made his first collegiate appearance as he came in the 65th minute and made one save.
The Friars are back in action on Saturday, October 10 at 1:00 p.m. when they host Notre Dame at PC's Glay Field.
