PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball team (7-4) was defeated by Iona College (6-4) by a score of 82-73 on Saturday, Dec. 12 in a non-conference matchup at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Junior guard/forward Marshon Brooks (Stone Mountain, Ga.) led the Friars with 18 points while sophomore forward Jamine Peterson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) posted his second-straight double-double and sixth in nine games with 13 points and 14 rebounds.
The Friars were victimized by a difficult offensive night in which the team shot 30.8 percent (20-65) from the field, including a 16.1 percent mark (5-31) from 3-point territory. PC also struggled moving the basketball, making only six assists on 20 field goals.
After the teams battled to a 7-7 tie in the first five minutes of action, the Gaels used a 7-0 run to take an early 14-7 lead at the 14:06 mark of the first half. A 3-pointer by Brooks (Stone Mountain, Ga.) moved the Friars within two at 16-14, but Iona used a 10-3 spurt to build the lead back to nine at 26-17 with 5:27 to play in the half. With the Friars trailing by seven, a 3-point play by freshman guard Johnnie Lacy (Milwaukee, Wis.) cut the Gaels lead to 26-22, but the Friars could not cut into the lead in the final minutes of the half. Iona entered the break holding a 33-30 advantage.
The Friars struggled offensively in the first half, shooting 27.6 percent (8-29), including a 3-for-15 mark from beyond the arc. Wright led PC with eight first-half points.
Iona extended its lead to 38-31 in the opening minute of the second half. A jumper by Lacy moved the Friars back within three at 42-39, but the Gaels continued to control the pace of the game and a 3-point play by Scott Machado gave Iona a six-point lead at 56-50 with 9:59 to go in the game. A 3-pointer by Jonathan Huffman extended the Gaels lead to 10 at 61-51. With 7:29 left to play, Brooks converted a 3-point play to move the Friars back within five at 61-56, but Iona answered back and retook a nine-point lead at 65-56. The Gaels moved ahead by 12 at 72-60 with 2:39 remaining and Iona held on for the 82-73 victory.
Providence never led in the game.
The Friars are off until Monday, December 21, when they take on the Yale Bulldogs at 7:00 p.m. at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. The game will be the team's last non-conference matchup of the season before PC opens BIG EAST play at Notre Dame on December 30.
