The Providence College men's soccer team defeated Northeastern, 1-0, on Sunday, September 13 at Glay Field. Senior Timothy Ritter (Weston, Mass.) scored in the 35th minute to lead the way as the Friars improved to 3-1. Northeastern is now 1-2.
Providence controlled possession in the first 45 minutes and created the best chance to score when sophomore Chris Stoker (Holden, Mass.) setup junior Toussaint McClure (Atlanta, Ga.) from 18 yards out, but McClure's shot missed wide in the 11th minute. However, the Friars took the lead in the 35th minute as Ritter scored his third goal of the season. PC goalkeeper Timothy Murray (Haverhill, Mass.) drove a long punt down the left flank. Ritter ran onto the ball and scored with the outside of his right foot from 10 yards out. Ritter nearly scored his second goal of the game shortly thereafter as his right-footed bending shot missed wide from 25 yards out in the 38th minute.
The Huskies created scoring chances in the second half. Ryan Burham nearly scored the equalizer, but his bending shot from 22 yards out missed wide in the 51st minute. In the 58th minute, a through ball was played to Santiago Bedoya, but before Bedoya could get to the ball Murray was there to dive and smother it. Murray earned his third shutout of the season and the 21st of his career. Scott Partridge made four saves for the Huskies.
All of Providence's three victories have been by identical 1-0 scores and Ritter has scored all of PC's goals this season. The Friars are back in action on Friday, September 18 when they open the BIG EAST Conference schedule at Rutgers.
