PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's soccer team scored late in the first half en route to a 1-0 victory over Syracuse Friday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference match at Glay Field. The win marked the first conference victory of the season for the Friars who improved to 4-3 overall and 1-2 in the BIG EAST. Syracuse fell to 1-7 and 0-3 in league action.
The Friars carried the play in the first 45 minutes as they outshot the Orange, 8-1. Grad student Roy Sandeman (Edinburgh, Scotland) nearly gave the Friars the lead in the 20th minute. Following a corner kick, the ball bounced to Sandeman, but his left-footed shot from 12 yards out was saved by Syracuse goalkeeper Ryan Jones. However, in the 42nd minute, the Friars struck and took a 1-0 lead when junior Matt Marcin (Wilmington, Del.) scored his first goal of the season. Classmate Nick Cianci (West Hartford, Conn.) controlled the ball down the left flank, eluded two defenders before slipping a pass from the base line to Marcin, whose one-touch shot with the outside of his right foot from eight yards out found the back of the net.
In the second half, the Orange created more scoring chances and nearly scored the equalizer. In the 59th minute, Hansen Woodruff played a through ball to Elliot Townsend, but his shot from 18 yards out was blocked by a PC defender. The Friars responded in the 70th minute when Cianci fired a left-footed shot from 18 yards out that Jones was able to push aside with a diving effort. The Orange came close again in the 79th minute as Woodruff's header from 15 yards out just missed wide left.
The Friars finished with a 12-5 shot advantage as Jones made seven saves. Murray stopped two shots to record his fourth shutout of the season and the 22nd of his career.
The Friars are back in action on Sunday, September 27 at 3:00 p.m. when they host No. 18 St. John's at PC's Glay Field.
