PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's soccer team was defeated by fifth-ranked Connecticut, 2-0, Wednesday afternoon at PC's Glay Field. UConn improved to 9-1-2 overall, including a 3-0-1 mark in the BIG EAST, while Providence is now 5-5-1 and 0-4 in league play.
The Huskies took the lead in the 28th minute when Alan Ponce played a cross from the left end line to Tony Cascio who fired a right-footed shot from six yards out that glanced off the right post and into the net. It marked Cascio's team-leading ninth of the season. The Friars nearly evened the score in the 32nd minute when senior Matt Marcin (Wilmington, Del.) fired a shot with the outside of his left foot, but Josh Ford made a leaping save as he pushed the ball out for a corner kick. PC goalkeeper Jhojan Obando (Kissimmee, Fla.) made two point-blank saves in the first half to keep the Friars in the game.
The Friars had a 5-2 edge in shots in the second half, but the Huskies sealed the win in the 76th minute when Ponce scored from close range after a cross from Max Wasserman.
The Friars finished with an 11-9 advantage in shots. Ford had one save to record the shutout, while Obando totalled three stops.
The Friars are back in action on Saturday, October 16 when they face DePaul at 2:00 p.m. in Chicago, Ill.
