SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - - Senior Andrew Sousa (Fall River, Mass.) scored a career-high two goals to lead the Providence College men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Seton Hall Wednesday night in a BIG EAST Conference match in South Orange, N.J. It marked the third consecutive victory for the Friars who improved to 8-5-2 overall and 3-4-1 in the BIG EAST. Seton Hall is now 3-12-1 overall and 1-7 in league action.
The Friars took a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute when senior Matt Marcin (Wilmington, Del.) played a pass down the left side to Sousa who was able to dribble in before scoring for the second consecutive match. Sophomore Marc Cintron (Piscataway, N.J.) also assisted on the goal. The Friars went into halftime with a one-goal edge, but that lead lasted 58 seconds into the second half as the Pirates benefitted from an own goal to even the game at 1-1. However, Sousa struck again in the 55th minute to give Providence the lead for good. Cintron played the ball to the top of the 18-yard box to Sousa who fired a shot into the net from 22 yards out as the Friars earned their first win over Seton Hall since 2007.
Red-shirt junior Jhojan Obando (Kissimmee, Fla.) made six saves for the Friars, while Sean Carr and Kevin Bonder combined to make four stops for the Pirates.
For the Friars, who extended their unbeaten streak to four games (3-0-1), it marks the sixth consecutive season that they have earned a BIG EAST playoff berth.
The Friars will complete their regular season schedule at home on Saturday, October 30 at 1:00 p.m. on Senior Day.
