HARTFORD, CONN. - The Providence College volleyball team (10-19, 2-6) dropped a dramatic five-set match (25-20, 24-26, 25-23, 25-19, 19-21) in league play at Hartford (8-17, 3-5) on Friday night.
The Friars fell despite 17 kills each from junior Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.) and freshman Emily Hall (Canal Winchester, Ohio). Juniors Lauren Hendel (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) and Shelagh Dolan (Westford, Mass.) added 12 and nine kills, respectively.
The Friar defense saw two players in double-digit digs, as sophomore libero Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.) picked up 16 digs, while Hendel added 12. Hall narrowly missed a double-double, recording nine digs. Meanwhile, junior setter Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.) eclipsed the 50-assist mark, picking up 55 for the match.
Hartford was led by Dionaa Kirton, who recorded 20 kills while hitting at a .312 clip. Also in double-figure kills were Kami Nethersole (13), Michelle Cordell (12) and Lindsay Anderson (10). Kirton and Nethersole recorded double-doubles, as they each added 15 digs.
The Friars picked up a 25-20 victory in the first set, powered by a .278 hitting percentage. Hartford went on to take nail-biters in the second and third sets by scores of 26-24 and 25-23. Providence rebounded to force a fifth set with a 25-19 in in the fourth frame. In a dramatic fifth set, the Hawks captured the match with a 21-19 victory, well past the usual race to 15 in the final frame.
Providence will look to rebound on Sunday, October 31, when they travel to Stony Brook for another America East match. First serve will take place at 1:00 p.m.
