PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team took a five-set thriller (25-23, 19-25, 25-23, 15-25, 15-13) from Rhode Island on Tuesday night at Mullaney Gymnasium. The Friars improve to 9-12, while Rhode Island falls to 11-5. The match was so tight throughout, the Rams scored more total points than Providence (109-99), but the Friars scored when it counted most.
The Friars were powered by junior Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.), who posted 21 kills while hitting at a blistering .463 clip. Classmate Shelagh Dolan (Westford, Mass.) added ten kills and another junior, setter Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif), posted a double-double with 43 assists and 11 digs.
The Friar defense was outstanding, as sophomore Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.) led the way with 27 digs, followed by 18 from freshman Anne Powers (La Selva Beach, Calif.), 15 from senior co-captain Emily Morris (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) and 10 from senior Sondra Snyder (Norwood, N.J.).
The Rams were led by Kayla Wilson, who posted 16 kills and 18 digs for a double-double. Jill Anderson and Lauren McIntosh each added 13. Annie Nelson picked up most of the assists, collecting 51. The URI back row was anchored by Ashley Tennant (26 digs), while bolstered by Lindsay Potts (14 digs) and Kalyn Klaess (11 digs).
The Friars took the first set, keyed by seven kills from Fletcher. The Friars were able to overcome a seven-point URI run that gave the Rams a 13-9 lead. Providence got back in it, scoring two huge aces from Morrison. No team would see a lead larger than two points the duration of the set and a Fletcher kill got the win for Providence, 25-23.
The Rams rebounded in the second set, behind seven kills from Anderson. With the match tied at 15-15, Ashley Tennant notched a kill before Anderson scored back-to-back kills to force Friar Head Coach Margot Royer-Johnson to take a timeout. The lead would get to 19-15 and Providence could not recover. URI evened the match at one set apiece with a 25-19 win.
The third set again saw Fletcher carry the Friars, this time with six kills. Despite Fletcher's play, the Friars found themselves down 22-20 before kills by Morris and Fletcher helped Providence get within a point, 23-22. Fletcher came to the service line with her squad down one and kills from Dolan and Morrison helped the Friars take the set, 25-23.
The Rams again rebounded in the fourth set, thanks to a balance attack and seven Providence errors. Wilson, Britta Baarstad and Lauren McIntosh each notched three kills in the set as the Rams hit .300 as a team. The Rams were also helped by their back row, as Tennant and Potts each recorded five digs and URI forced a fifth set with a 25-15 win.
The deciding set saw both teams struggle to overcome errors, as both posted negative hitting percentages in the set. The Friars jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the race to 15 points, before building on that lead behind Morrison's service game. The junior notched back-to-back aces as Providence got out to a 9-5 lead. The Rams would not roll over, first cutting the lead to 13-10, then 14-13, before a block by Morrison and Dolan sealed the deal, securing a 15-13 win.
The victory marks the first time the Friars have defeated their in-state rival under Royer-Johnson. In six matches during that time period, this marks the third time the rivals have played five sets. It also improves the Friars record at home to 6-2.
The match can be seen locally on a tape-delay basis on Cox Sports (Ch. 3) on Wednesday, October 6, at 8:00 p.m. and again on Saturday, October 9, also at 8:00 p.m.
The Friars return to America East play this weekend, traveling to Albany on Friday, October 8, before moving on to Binghamton on Sunday, October 10.
