HANOVER, N.H. - The Providence College volleyball team dropped a three-set match to Dartmouth on Tuesday night (15-25, 19-25, 15-25) in Hanover, N.H. The Friars fall to 7-11 on the season, while the Big Green improves to 10-2.
Troubles on the road continued to haunt the Friars, as they fall to 3-10 away from Mullaney Gymnasium. The leader was for Providence was senior co-captain Emily Morris (Hermosa Beach, Calif.), who posted six kills while adding 10 digs, both tops for the squad. Juniors Lauren Hendel (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) and Shelagh Dolan (Westford, Mass.) each added five kills.
The Big Green was led by the tandem of Madeline Baird and Annie Villanueva, who posted 14 and 13 kills, respectively, while setter Alissa Santa Maria picked up 35 assists. The Friars had entered the match leading America East in opponent hitting percentage, with opponents only swinging at a .168 clip, but that trend was reversed as Dartmouth posted a .321 mark.
The Friars were hanging tough in the first set, trailing 11-10, before the Big Green got rolling and built a 19-12 lead before Royer-Johnson took a time out. It did little to stem the tide and the Friars dropped the first set 25-15.
It looked as if Providence could rebound in the second set, jumping out to a 7-3 lead, keyed a Hendel kill and a service ace from sophomore Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.). The Friars led at 12-9 when a Dartmouth timeout turned things around, leading to a 7-2 Dartmouth run to put the Big Green on top, 16-14. The Friars were not able to recover and Dartmouth took the set, 25-19.
The third set saw the Friar attack struggle, as the team committed 12 errors in the set. Dartmouth was able to take advantage, capturing the set, 25-15, and the match, 3-0.
Providence returns to the court this Friday, October 1, as they host Stony Brook at Mullaney Gymnasium. The match marks Providence's inaugural match in the America East conference after spending the past seven seasons as an independent. The match will also feature the team's Friends of Jaclyn adoption ceremony (check back to Friars.com for more details). First service will be at 6:00 p.m.
