PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Freshman Marcos Ugarte (Providence, R.I.) scored in the first half as the Providence College men's soccer team earned a crucial 1-0 victory over Pittsburgh Tuesday night in a BIG EAST match played at Ambrose Urbanic Field. With the win, the Friars improved to 8-5-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the BIG EAST. Pittsburgh fell to 4-10-1 overall and 2-4-0 in the league.
Ugarte's goal came in the 15th minute. Sophomore Greg Davis (Jamaica, N.Y.) played a short pass to Ugarte, whose shot from inside the 18-yard box found the back of the net. Junior Marc Cintron (Piscataway, N.J.) also assisted on the goal. It marked Ugarte's fifth goal of the season which is tied for the team lead. The Friars finished with an 11-8 advantage in shots, including a 6-1 edge in shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Jhojan Obando (Kissimmee, Fla.) earned his sixth shutout of the season and the 12th of his career.
The Friars are back in action on Friday, October 21 at 7:00 p.m. when they play at West Virginia in a game that will air live on FOX Soccer Channel.
