PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's soccer team was defeated by Notre Dame, 2-1, Wednesday afternoon in a BIG EAST match played at Glay Field. The loss ended the Friars' three-game winning streak as they now stand 9-6-1 overall and 4-3-1 in league action. The Fighting Irish are now 8-3-4 overall and 4-2-1 in the conference.

Notre Dame struck first in the 10th minute when Brendan King recorded his first goal of the season. Leon Brown played a give-and-go with King who scored from 12 yards out into the lower left corner to give his team the half time lead. The Friars nearly scored the equalizer early in the second half. Senior John Raley (St. Inigoes, Md.) ripped a shot from 25 yards out and UND goalkeeper Will Walsh made the save. The rebound bounced up and junior Marc Cintron (Piscataway, N.J.) headed the ball from six yards out, but Walsh was there to make another stop in the 49th minute.

The Fighting Irish increased their lead to 2-0 in the 80th minute as Harrison Shipp scored from eight yards out off a pass from the left side by Greg Klazura. The Friars kept pressing and were awarded a direct free kick from 20 yards out. Raley fired a shot that Walsh saved, but this time Cintron pounced on the rebound and used his left foot to score and cut the UND lead to 2-1 with 39 seconds remaining. It marked Cintron's third goal of the season.

The Friars finished with a 17-13 advantage in shots. Walsh had four saves, while PC senior goalkeeper Jhojan Obando (Kissimmee, Fla.) also had four stops.
