Men's Hockey And UMass Tie, 3-3, In Overtime

AMHERST, Mass. - The Providence College men's hockey team and the University of Massachusetts skated to a 3-3 overtime tie Saturday night in a Hockey East game played at Mullins Center in Amherst, Mass. With the tie, the Friars moved to 7-14-7 overall and 3-12-6 in league play. The Minutemen are now 6-16-5 overall and 5-11-5 in conference action.

The Friars nearly took the lead at 9:55 of the first period while on the power play when freshman Steven Shamanski (Carberry, Manitoba) fired a wrist shot from the point that was re-directed by senior Ian O'Connor (Londonderry, N.H.) and off the right post. The Minutemen scored first at 16:14 when Michael Marcou collected a rebound in the slot and lifted a wrist shot past junior goalie Alex Beaudry (Cumberland, Ontario). Beaudry finished with 16 saves in the opening period, including a point-blank stop off the stick of Troy Power at 14:27.

The Minutemen added to their lead at 1:44 of the second period on a goal by Joel Hanley. The Friars responded with three goals in a span of 4:54 to take a 3-2 lead. Senior defenseman Eric Baier (North Kingstown, R.I.) scored on the power play off a one-timer from the right point at 6:18. It marked Baier's third goal this season. Classmates Ben Farrer (Calgary, Alberta) and Jordan Kremyr (Cloverdale, B.C.) assisted on the goal. Freshman Derek Army (North Kingstown, R.I.) netted his sixth goal at 7:57 off an assist from sophomore Chris Rooney (Canton, Mass.) to help the Friars pull even (2-2) at 7:57. Senior Kyle MacKinnon (Walnut, Calif.) then gave the Friars a 3-2 lead as recorded his team-leading 14th goal of the season at 11:12. O'Connor collected the assist after gaining possession of the puck along the left wing boards and playing it out front to MacKinnon.

The Minutemen pulled even (3-3) with 38 seconds left in the third period when Chase Langeraap scored from in close.

Beaudry totaled a season-high 42 saves, five shy of a career mark. UMass' Paul Dainton stopped 19 shots.

The Friars are back in action on Friday, February 18 when they play at No. 14 Boston University.
