Louisville, Ky. -

On Saturday, February 19, the Providence College swimming teams ended their respective seasons at the BIG EAST Championships held at the University of Louisville's Ralph R. Wright Natatorium. The men's squad placed 10th out of 11 teams, while the women finished in 11th out of 11 teams.

Louisville ran away with both men's and women's team championships. The Cardinal women's victory ended a 14-year reign by second-place finisher, Notre Dame. Notre Dame's conference championship winning streak is the longest such streak for any sport in conference history. The Louisville men now have won two consecutive BIG EAST Championships.

On Saturday-the last day of the four day event-16 women and six men competed for the Friar swimming programs. The Friars swam in the preliminary rounds of the 200y back, 100y free, 200y breast and 200y fly events. The Friars failed to qualify for the finals (top 8 finishers in the prelims qualify for the finals).

Freshman Kathleen Degnan (Narragansett, R.I.) once again led the women. Degnan posted 2:07.86 in the 200y back, nearly five seconds faster than her original qualifying time. In the 100y free, sophomore Sam Schlich (Massapequa, N.Y.) and freshman Jillian Mullany swam to identical times of 54.12 (34th out of 51). The time marks a personal best for both swimmers. Senior Courtney Larcom (Morristown, N.J.) finished her collegiate career with 17:51.91 time in the 1650y free. The time was 15-seconds faster than her qualifying time (18:06.42).

For the men, freshman Michael Luiz (New Bedford, Mass.) was the lone Friar to compete in the 100y free. Luiz came in 45th out of 48 participants with a time of 48.62. Junior Collin Casciano (Hewitt, N.J.) and sophomore Chris Morales (Ridgewood, N.J.) finished within a tenth-of-a-second of each other in the 200y fly (1:57.81 & 1:57.94). The 200y fly was the final event of Saturday's preliminary qualifying round.

The Championships ended with the awards ceremony as Louisville's Arthur Albiero took home the Men's BIG EAST Swimming Coach of the Year and the Women's BIG EAST Swimming Coach of the Year honors. Mountaineer teammates Rachael Burnett and Mandie Nugent were honored as BIG EAST Women's Most Outstanding Swimmer. Seton Hall's Kevin Webster was named the 2011 BIG EAST Men's Most Outstanding Swimmer.
