BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Providence College men's hockey team was defeated by the University of Vermont, 7-1, on Saturday, February 5 at the Gutterson Fieldhouse in Burlington, Vt. The Catamounts scored three goals in each of the first two periods en route to the win.

Ben Albertson gave Vermont (6-15-5, 4-11-4 Hockey East) a 1-0 lead at 2:14 of the first period, but the Providence (7-13-6, 3-11-5 Hockey East) evened the score at 6:55 when senior Matt Germain (Rockland, Mass.) scored a power-play goal. Senior Kyle MacKinnon (Walnut, Calif.) fired a shot from the point that was re-directed by classmate Ben Farrer (Calgary, Alberta) and UVM goalie Rob Madore made the initial save. However, Germain pounced on the rebound to notch his seventh goal of the season. Vermont then tallied two goals in the latter stages of the period to take a 3-1 edge. Chris McCarthy made the score 2-1 at 14:08, while Drew MacKenzie added a power-play goal at 19:38.

The Friars had chances early on in the second period to cut the lead, including Germain whose shot at 2:17 was saved by Madore. Germain also hit the post later in the period. However, Andres Franzon, Tobias Nilsson-Roos and H.T. Lenz each scored in a span of 4:35 late in the period as the Catamounts increased their lead to 6-1 after two periods.

Vermont added a third-period goal to complete the scoring. The Catamounts outshot the Friars, 38-32, as Madore made 31 saves. PC juniors Alex Beaudry (Cumberland, Ont.) and Justin Gates (Cranston, R.I.) combined for 31 stops.

The Friars are back in action on Friday, February 11 at 7:00 p.m. when they host No. 1 ranked Boston College at PC's Schneider Arena.
