NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. - The Providence College men's hockey team was defeated by No. 7 Merrimack, 6-1, Friday night in a Hockey East game played at Lawler Arena in North Andover, Mass. The Warriors scored three times in the first period and never looked back as they clinched home ice for the quarterfinal round of the Hockey East Playoffs. The Friars have to defeat Merrimack in their final regular season game tomorrow night and UMass has to lose to Maine in order for PC to clinch the eighth and final playoff spot.
Merrimack (22-7-4, 16-7-3 Hockey East) took a 1-0 lead at 6:40 of the first period when Ryan Flanigan fired a wrist shot from the right circle that beat PC junior goalie Alex Beaudry (Cumberland, Ont.) high to the glove side. Jesse Todd added to Merrimack's goal at 15:23 as he scored his 17th goal of the season from the right circle. Flanigan netted his second goal in the period and 10th of the season 26 seconds later to give the Warriors a three-goal edge after one period.
Providence (7-18-8, 3-16-7 Hockey East) pulled to 3-1 just 16 seconds into the second period when sophomore Tim Schaller (Merrimack, N.H.) scored his fifth goal of the season as seniors Ben Farrer (Cloverdale, B.C.) and Eric Baier (North Kingstown, R.I.) picked up assists on the play. However, Joe Cucci scored two power-play goals in a span of 30 seconds as the Warriors increased their lead to 5-1 after two periods.
Stephane Da Costa scored a power-play goal in the third period to complete the scoring at 14:05.
Beaudry finished with 17 saves in two periods for the Friars, while sophomore Russ Stein (Ridgefield, Conn.), who made his collegiate debut, stopped 12 shots. Joe Cannata totaled 18 saves to earn the win for the Warriors.
The two teams will complete the home-and-and series on Saturday, March 5 at Schneider Arena on Senior Night.
