SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -

The men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to BIG EAST Blue Division foe Seton Hall on Wednesday night at Owen T. Carroll Field. Senior Keith Jecewiz (Smithtown, N.Y.) tied the game at 1-1 in the second half, but the Pirates netted what turned out to be the game-winning goal at 73:37. With the win, the Pirates improved to 5-5-0 (1-1-0 BIG EAST) on the year, while the Friars moved to 2-7-1 (0-3-0 BIG EAST).

The Friars faced an early deficit when, at 5:10, Christian Battistesa scored his second goal of the year to give Seton Hall a 1-0 lead. In the 56th minute, Jecewiz tied the game when he put in a through ball from junior midfielder Phil Ziegler (East Lyme, Conn.) for his team-leading third goal of the season and the seventh of his Friar career.

But at 73:37, the Pirates answered with what turned out to be the game-winning goal when George Velasquez scored his first goal of the year with an assist from Konrad Plewa.

With just under 12 minutes to play, red shirt sophomore Keasel Broome (Claymont, Del.) tipped a drive by Seton Hall's Bolu Akinyode over the bar to keep the Friars in the match, and followed with another save on the ensuing corner kick. The Friars pushed forward and generated a pair of corner kicks down the stretch but were unable to come up with a second game-tying goal.

Broome finished the game with three saves in the Friar net, while his counterpart Kevin Bonder made three saves in the Seton Hall goal. For the match, the Friars outshot Seton Hall, 14-9, and generated nine corner kicks to the Pirates' one. Jecewiz and red shirt junior Wilder Arboleda (Pawtucket, R.I.) led the Friar offense with three shots each.

The Friars will take a break from BIG EAST play when they return to action versus Columbia at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 9 in New York, N.Y.
