ORONO, Maine - The Providence College women's ice hockey team concluded its back-to-back conference series with Maine Saturday, Nov. 3 with a weekend sweep. The Friars defeated Maine, 5-1, moving their overall record to 6-3-1 and their Hockey East record to 4-0-0 and first in Hockey East.
The Friars were the first on the board with a goal at 6:12 of the first period. Junior Maggie Pendleton (Woodbury, Minn.) fired a puck from the blue line that left the puck on a plate for sophomore Beth Hanrahan (Poolesville, Md.), who lifted it upstairs over Maine goaltender Meghann Treacy, for her second goal on the season. With the shots at 12-3 in Providence's favor the Friars headed to the locker room for the first intermission.
Providence took advantage of Maine penalties during the second period. On a five on three power-play, freshman Molly Illikainen (Grand Rapids, Minn.) notched her second goal of the weekend and fifth on the season with a rebound goal at 7:07. Junior's Corinne Buie (Edina, Minn.) and Rebecca Morse (Westfield, N.J.) took the initial two shots before Illikainen fired it in, to give the Friars a 2-0 lead.
Still on the power-play, Providence extended their lead to 3-0 with a goal from sophomore Haley Frade (Marion, mass.), her second of the weekend and fourth on the season. Frade put the puck past Treacy to give the Friars their fifth power-play goal on the season with 5:48 left in the second period.
Before the conclusion of the second period Maine closed the Friars gap, 3-1, with a goal at 4:20 from sophomore Katy Massey off a scrum in front of freshman Sarah Bryant (Bethleham, Pa.), who finished the period with a combined 10 saves for both the first and second period.
The Friars continued their strong power-play during the third period with their third power-play goal at 6:37. Frade notched her second goal of the game when she tipped in a quick pass from Buie on the back door to give the Friars a 4-1 lead. They were assisted by freshman Lexi Slattery (Lino Lakes, Minn.) on the play.
Senior Jessica Vella (Pickering, Ontario) sealed the win, 5-1, for the Friars, with an unassisted short-handed empty-net goal at 1:59 of the third period. Providence outshot Maine 33-19 and went three for eight on the power-play.
The Friars are back on the road when they travel to Chestnut Hill, Mass. to continue their Hockey East play against Boston College. The game is set for Wednesday, Nov. 7 at 7:00 p.m. at the Conte Forum.
