WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The Providence College men's soccer team fell to Monmouth University, 3-1, on Monday, August 27 in West Long Branch, N.J. The Friars fall to 0-2-0 on the young season, while Monmouth improves to 2-0.
The Friars took a 1-0 lead on the scoreboard in the 37th minute as junior Anthony Baumann (Spring Hill, Fla.) converted a penalty kick. Monmouth held a 9-2 edge in shot attempts in the opening 45 minutes, including a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal.
In the second half, Monmouth managed to take a 2-1 lead in the 64th minute with back-to-back goals in a span of 15 seconds. Francois Navarro struck first as he found the back of the net on a cross from Edney Derrick at 63:07. Joseph Schmid added the second goal at 63:22 as he found an opening at the right post off a feed from Francois.
Navarro tallied his second goal of the evening in the 70th minute of play to give Monmouth a 3-1 advantage. He collected a pass off a corner from Derrick and placed a low shot into the back of the net.
The Hawks outshot the Friars, 19-7, including a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal. Monmouth also recorded a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.
Redshirt sophomore Keasel Broome (Claymont, Del.) recorded six saves as the Providence goalkeeper in his collegiate debut. Alex Blackburn notched two saves in the victory for Monmouth.
Providence returns to action on Friday, August 31 against Bryant University in the opening game of the Ocean State Soccer Classic. The game will be played at Noon in Smithfield, R.I.
