CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Providence College men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to conference foe Xavier on Saturday, Oct. 2 at the Xavier University Soccer Complex located in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Friars move to 9-4-2 (4-3-0 BIG EAST) on the season while Xavier improves to 9-5-2 (5-2-0 BIG EAST).

Xavier jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the fourth minute when Andy Kaplan and Matt Walker connected to find the back of the net. Xavier increased its lead to 2-0 in the 25th minute when Walker tallied his second goal of the match. The remainder of the first half was scoreless and the Friars trailed Xavier 2-0 at the half.

Providence opened the second half with a strong offensive presence. The Friars pulled within one, 2-1, in the 54rd minute with a goal from freshman Mac Steeves (Needham, Mass.). Classmate Julian Gressel (Neustadt an der Aisch, Germany) fed Steeves a pass that he buried from six yards out to notch his first collegiate goal. With the assist, Gressel maintains his position as the Friars leading scorer with 11 points on a team-best four goals and three assists. That was as close as the Friars would get. Xavier held its 2-1 advantage until the final whistle.

Red shirt junior Keasel Broome (Claymont, Del.) played all 90 minutes in goal for the Friars and finished the game with six saves.

Providence returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 2 when the Friars play host to Butler. The game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. and will be played at the Turf Field located at Ray Treacy Track in Providence, R.I.
