PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
The Providence College men's soccer team defeated the Quinnipiac Bobcats, 3-2, in its home opener on Friday, Aug. 30 in an afternoon tilt at Glay Field. Freshman Julian Gressel (Neustadt an der Aisch, Germany) notched two goals in his collegiate debut as a Friar.
The Friars jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute when Gressel buried a feed from teammate, junior Fabio Machado (Leominster, Mass.). Gressel's strike beat the Bobcat's keeper to the far left corner. Quinnipiac answered in the 34th minute with an unassisted goal from Machel Baker. The game was tied at the half, 1-1.
Providence wasted no time in the second half, taking a 2-1 lead with a goal from red-shirt senior, Wilder Arboleda (Pawtucket, R.I.) in the 48th minute. Wilder received a pass from junior Phil Towler (Cumbria, England), beat a Quinnipiac defender, and found the back of the net to give Providence the advantage. Gressel tallied his second goal of the game in the 50th minute to give the Friars a two goal advantage, 3-1.
Quinnipiac came within one goal, of Providence in the 56th minute with a finish from Simon Hinde, but that was as close as they would get. Gressel's strike in the 50th minute served as the difference maker. The Friars held their 3-2 advantage until the final whistle to secure the first win of their 2013 campaign.
Providence returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 1, when the Friars will travel to Worcester, Mass. to take on the Crusaders of Holy Cross. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
