CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -

The Providence College men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season at Virginia, 4-0, on Tuesday night at Klöckner Stadium. The Friars will now enter BIG EAST play with a 5-1-2 overall record, while the Cavaliers improved to 3-3-1 on the year with the win.

Virginia took a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute when junior Eric Bird volleyed in a Cavalier corner kick taken by sophomore Scott Thomsen.

One of the Friars' best chances of the game came in the 33rd minute when sophomore Manny Andrade (Boston, Mass.) headed down a free kick in the box for an onrushing Jeff Kilday (Marshfield, Mass.), but the red-shirt sophomore's shot went just over the bar.

Bird then made it 2-0 in the 41st minute when he took a shot from 20-yards out that deflected past Friar goalkeeper Keasel Broome (Claymont, Del.) and found the far lower corner of the net.

In the second half, freshman midfielder Patrick Foss capitalized for UVA on a free kick that he curled in from 25-yards out to make it 3-0 in the 68th minute. Freshman Riggs Lennon made it 4-0 in the 81st minute when he finished a through ball from in close.

Virginia outshot the Friars 11-6, including a 5-0 advantage in shots on goal. Cavalier goalie Jeff Gal did not make a save in the shutout, while Broome finished with one save for the Friars.

The Cavaliers snapped Providence's seven-game unbeaten streak to start the season, which was the Friars' best start to a season since starting 2005 with a 4-0-5 record.

Providence opens BIG EAST play at home against Seton Hall at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28.
