WAKEFIELD, Mass. -

After back-to-back 37-save performances over the weekend against sixth-ranked Boston University, junior goaltender Jon Gillies (South Portland, Maine) was named Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week (Nov. 3).

On Saturday, Nov. 1, Gillies made 37 saves, including 17 in the third period, to help the Friars to a 2-1 victory at Boston University as Providence earned a weekend series split with the Terriers. In addition to his 74 saves, Gillies posted a 2.54 goals-against average and a .937 save percentage in the two games. It marked Gillies' ninth-career Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week honor.

Gillies and the Friars are back in action this weekend with a home-and-home Hockey East series versus Merrimack. Game one will be played at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 8 at Schneider Arena.
