WAKEFIELD, Mass. - After back-to-back shutouts last week, including a 43-save performance against No. 11/12 Boston College, Providence College junior goaltender Jon Gillies (South Portland, Maine) was named Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week (Dec. 1).
On Tuesday, Nov. 25, Gillies made 22 stops as the Friars blanked Army, 3-0, at Schneider Arena. Then on Saturday, Nov. 29, Gillies stopped all 43 shots he faced against the Eagles for his second consecutive shutout. Combined with Nick Ellis (Millersville, Md.), who shutout New Hampshire on Nov. 22, the Friars have recorded three consecutive shutouts for the first time in program history.
Dating back to Providence's game against Vermont on Nov. 15, Gillies' personal shutout streak stands at 161:24, while Gillies and Ellis have combined to keep the opposition off the scoreboard for the last 221:24. The award marked Gillies' tenth-career Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week honor and his second this season (Nov. 3).
Gillies has a 1.87 goals-against average on the season and a .940 save percentage. His three shutouts this season are tied for the third-most in the country and is the top total in Hockey East. His eight career shutouts in Hockey East play rank tied for sixth in league history.
The Friars are back in action at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 3 when they travel to Boston, Mass. for a Hockey East game versus Northeastern at Matthews Arena.
