WAKEFIELD, Mass. -- Providence College men's hockey junior goaltender Jon Gillies (South Portland, Maine) has been named the Hockey East's Stop It Goaltender of the Month for November.
Gillies went 5-2-0 in November with three shutouts. He posted a 0.86 goals-against average and a .973 save percentage as he turned aside 216 of the 222 shots he faced in 417:18 of work and closed the month with back-to-back shutouts.
Some of Gillies' November highlights included a 43-save performance to lead the Friars to a 1-0 win against No. 11/12 Boston College (Nov. 29) and a 37-save showing at then No. 6/6 Boston University to help Providence to a 2-1 win (Nov. 1).
After back-to-back shutouts last week against Army (Nov. 25) and Boston College (Nov. 29), Gillies was named Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week (Dec. 1). Combined with Nick Ellis (Millersville, Md.), who shutout New Hampshire on Nov. 22, the Friars have recorded three consecutive shutouts for the first time in program history. Dating back to Providence's game against Vermont on Nov. 15, Gillies' personal shutout streak stands at 161:24, while Gillies and Ellis have combined to keep the opposition off the scoreboard for the last 221:24.
Gillies has a 1.87 goals-against average on the season and a .940 save percentage. His three shutouts this season are tied for the third-most in the country and is the top total in Hockey East. His eight career shutouts in Hockey East play rank tied for sixth in league history, while his 12 career shutouts rank second among active players.
The Friars play a Hockey East road game tonight at 7:00 p.m. (Dec. 3) against Northeastern.
