DURHAM, N.H. -The Providence College women's ice hockey team defeated New Hampshire 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Whittemore Center. Providence captured the season series 2-1 with the win and improves to 5-14-4 on the season and 4-6-1 in the Hockey East. UNH now stands at 4-15-1 on the year and 2-9-0 in conference play.

Senior Brooke Simpson (Boxborough, Mass.) first put the Friars on the board 5:26 into the first period when she collected a pass that bounced off the leg pad of UNH's Vilma Vaattovaara. Senior Beth Hanrahan (Poolesville, Md.) collected the assist on the play.

New Hampshire tied it up at one in the second period (5:25) when Kayla Mork scored while Jonna Curtis registered the assist. The Friars later killed off a 5-on-3 UNH advantage on the power-play in the period.

Providence regained the lead (2-1) with a tip in power-play goal by Hanrahan (17:01-second period). Junior Lexi Romanchuk (San Jose, Calif.) and sophomore Cassidy Carels (Bruxelles, Manitoba) picked up the assists. The tally proved to be the game-winning goal.

The Friars gained a 3-1 lead at 2:33 of the third period when freshman Brooke Boquist (Thunder Bay, Ontario) scored a breakaway goal, with the helpers coming from Carels and senior Victoria Virtue (Walpole, Mass.).

Carels added another power-play goal from the deep slot at 11:20 of the third to give Providence a 4-1 advantage. Simpson and Hanrahan combined for the assist.

Junior netminder Allie Morse (Cottage Grove, Minn.) stopped 22 of the 23 shots she faced in the game. For UNH, Vaattovaara turned away 21 shots.

The Friars will next host Maine at Schneider Arena for a single conference game on Sunday, Jan. 18. Earlier in the season Providence split with Maine, losing the first game 3-2 (Nov. 22) and winning the second game 2-1 in overtime (Nov. 23).
