PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's soccer team fell to Butler, 2-0, in its second BIG EAST Conference game of the season. The Friars drop to 4-4-1 (0-2 BIG EAST) on the season, while the Bulldogs improve to 6-0-3 (2-0 BIG EAST).
Neither team was able to get on the board in the first half of the game. As the first 45 minutes came to a close, Butler led in shots (7-4), while Providence had the advantage in corner kicks (4-2).
In the opening minutes of the second half, Butler's Marco Charalambous crossed the ball to Vincent Mitchell, who made a breakaway run up the field. Mitchell shot the ball in the bottom right of the net to put the Bulldogs up 1-0.
In the 59th minute of play, Butler's Kieran Geldenhuys found the back of the net off of a header to extend the Bulldog's lead to 2-0. Jeff Adkins and Eric Leonard were credited with the assists.
As the final minutes of play ticked away, the Friars took several chances, but were unable to get on the board. Overall, Providence registered 12 shots to Butler's 11 during the game.
Red-shirt sophomore goalkeeper Ben Seguljic (Rye Brook, N.Y.) registered three saves on the night, while the Bulldog's keeper, Eric Dick, recorded four.
The Friars will return to action at 7:00 p.m. on Oct. 10 when they travel to Xavier.
