Emily Kennedy Awarded Fulbright Scholar Grant

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Senior Emily Kennedy (Tallahassee, Fla.), a four-year member of Providence College Women's Swimming Team, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar Grant and will return to Argentina to continue her research next year.

Emily'sresearch proposal,one of seven selected in Argentina, focuses on access to clean water in Claypole, alow-incomecommunity an hour outside the Buenos Aires. Claypole has no sewage system and contamination has infiltrated the sub-par water infrastructure.During her junior year abroad, Emilybegan research on the social movement that formed within the community to demand better access to water.Her work focuseson the cultural, environmental and political dynamics underlying the community's dilemma.

The Fulbright Program is a highly competitive, merit-based grant for international educational exchange for students, scholars, teachers, professionals, scientists and artists, founded by United States Senator J. William Fulbright in 1946. Under the Fulbright Program, competitively selected U.S. citizens may become eligible for scholarships to study, conduct research, or exercise their talents abroad; and citizens of other countries may qualify to do the same in the United States.

The Fulbright Program, one of the most prestigious awards programs worldwide,provides grants annually to undertake graduate study, advanced research, university lecturing, and classroom teaching.The program operates in more than 155 countries with the goal to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries.
